At 9:15 p.m. on September 4, 2009, China's first three sets of the 3MW offshore wind turbine were successfully put into operation at the Shanghai Donghai Bridge 102MW Offshore Wind Farm, the first National Offshore Wind Power Demonstration Project in China. Developed independently by Sinovel Wind Co., Ltd., it possesses overall self-owned intellectual property and is the mainstream and globally advanced wind turbine in the world. It is in good working condition and its operating indexes, such as the stability, the power curve and the utilization rate, have reached or exceeded the design requirements. This indicates that China's offshore wind turbine technology has taken a leading position in the world.

In May, 2008, the Donghai Bridge Offshore Wind Power Demonstration Project is China's first large-scale offshore wind power project approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. It is to the left of the Donghai Bridge in the southeast of Shanghai and its northernmost part is nearly 6 km from the coastline. Its southernmost part is 13 km from the coastline. The hydraulic mean depth is 10 meters in the field area, with an average wind velocity of 8.4 meters per second.

This project, whose total installed capacity is 102MW, adopted 34 sets of domestic 3MW offshore wind turbines, all developed by Sinovel. With the 90-metre-high wheel hub and 90-meter-long impeller diameter, this offshore wind turbine possesses the most powerful single-machine capacity. Adopting the structure of three vanes and horizontal axis as well as advanced pitch-controlled variable-speed doubly-fed power technology, the wind turbine is equipped with a compact main transmission chain, high-performance power generation system, independently-controlled pitch-controlled system, and on-line state monitoring system. It possesses the function of LVRT ability and adopts corrosion prevention measures and the redundancy design, to enhance its reliability. The 34 sets of domestic 3MW offshore wind turbines will be fully put into operation at the Donghai Bridge Offshore Wind Farm before the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, to become a beautiful scenic spot during the Expo.
